A little about myself

I've been obsessed with computers and the internet ever since I can remember. My first computer (thanks Dad!) was a Tandy 1000 SL in the mid-80s. I bought all the hardware components and built my own PC when I was 16. I can even recall tinkering around with my first GeoCities site back in the late 90s. So ... what I was going to take in university was never really a doubt. I was one of those lucky few!

Starting a new project, choosing a tech stack, setting up CI/CD, putting together a kickass team, and building a unique product that people love to use ... this is what really motivates me.

I have more than two decades of experience working on desktop, web, and SaaS software. It's been a mix of my own, bootstrapped startups, and collaborating with others on their projects. I pride myself on my ability to put together high-quality, remote teams, on a shoestring budget.

On a personal note, I've taken full advantage of my online working lifestyle and have been fortunate enough to do a ton of traveling (with my laptop in tow) and live in some pretty amazing places, like San Diego, Lake Tahoe, and currently near the Rockies in BC, Canada. I love taking a break and going for a quick hike with my dog, or searching for some powder on my snowboard.

I have some free time now, and am looking for a new project to help take to the next level. Will that be yours?

Some details on my previous projects

Flowster Co-Founder & CTO

2018 - present

An intuitive SaaS app for managing processes and workflows. Useful for any industry. Has a marketplace where anyone can sell their custom-made playbooks.

A good friend came to me with the idea for Flowster. He had an online course for eCommerce sellers that was wildly successful, but he wanted his own SOP software in order to more effectively run the course. Flowster now has over 20,000 users and hundreds of SOP playbooks in its marketplace.

YardYum Founder

2016 - present

"Airbnb for gardening". Started as a passion project to encourage more local gardening and reduce GHG emissions. It currently has nearly 15,000 members from over 50 countries. There's no monetization; it's free to use for both landowners and gardeners.

I had a burning desire to create something that would make a positive impact on climate change. I came up with the idea for YardYum when I realized that there was such a big demand for community gardening, but the supply was quite limited. There's unused yard space all over the world that would be perfect for gardening!

Winning Email Founder

2014 - 2016

A tool for scanning domains to identify issues that could impact email deliverability. Also able to analyze email subject and body content and recommend changes to prevent it being marked as spam.

While working on my various projects over the years, I gained a fair bit of experince with email deliverability and conversions. Everything from SPF, DKIM, to warming-up IPs, and responsive design. I decided to use this knowledge to create a tool that would help other people improve their email deliverability and optimize their conversions.

DoSocial Co-Founder & COO

2013 - 2016

A web app for posting to your social media channels, RSS feed automation, and an aggregator for trending content.

We decided to launch DoSocial as a sister-project to SocialAdr. Whereas SocialAdr was all about crowd-sourced social media attention, DoSocial was focused on managing your own social media accounts, and scheduling/automating posts.

SocialAdr Founder & COO

2009 - 2016

A crowd-sourced social media marketing platform. Integrated with dozens of the most popular social media sites. When launched in 2009 it was the only service of its kind.

This was my first attempt at being an entrepreneur, and I really lucked out. I started SocialAdr to solve a problem I was facing myself as I dabbled in online marketing. After some initial growth I brought on a partner. By 2012 revenue reached 7 figures (with ~80% profit margin). Eventually SocialAdr had over 100,000 users. This was also my first exit.

Quorum Software Manager

2004 - 2009

Helped deliver custom software solutions to energy companies. Managed development teams and $1M+ budgets.

This was my first "real job" out of university, and I started out as a junior consultant: writing code, working with clients and other developers, etc. I soon realized that I much prefered (and was better at) managing teams, timelines, budgets, and deliverables than just doing coding.

His outstanding aptitude for managing software development projects and using social media marketing were key to the success of the projects he has been involved with.

Pair that with a fun and kind personality, as well as a strong environmental consciousness, and you have a recipe for success, both as a person and a business owner.

Kane is one of only two people I'd jump into a new project with in the blink of an eye.

Education

Coursera

University of Victoria B.Eng in Computer Engineering

2004

Specialized in hardware. The program was fairly similar to electrical engineering, except for more of a focus on programming.

I was fortunate through UVic's co-op program to work at four (completely unique) companies throughout the program. This gave me invaluable, real-world experience to take into the workplace after graduating.
